It's that time of year again for one of the UK's biggest Music Festivals and where you find Hunter Wellington Boots on many of their stars. Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts is the mother of all festivals and an experience not to be missed starting next weekend the 22nd-26th June 2011.

• The first Glastonbury Festival was held on the day after Jimi Hendrix died in the 1970's, and was only over two days.
• The Cost £1 Entry including free milk from the farm.
• In 1981the Pyramid Stage was built but doubling up as a cowshed and animal food store during winter.
• 1982 saw the highest rainfall for a single day in 45 years was recorded.
• 1984 acts included: The Smiths, Elvis Costello, The Waterboys and Ian Drury.
• 1985 the Festival expanded into the neighbouring farm that enlarged the site by 100 acres.
• This year raised £100,000 for CND and local charities.
• 1987 was a year that almost stopped Glasto, the council refused the licence but was later overturned in court.
• This was the same year Womad stage was introduced.
• 1988 No Festival took place to review problems associated with the increase in size.
• 1990 the festival took the name Glastonbury Festival for Contemporary Performing Arts.
• 1990 also was the first year they had a professional car parking team.
• 1991 No Festival due to the disturbances the previous year.
• 1992 owner Michael Eavis donated profits of the festial to Greenpeace and Oxfam.
• This same year saw guests Tom Jones, Shakespear's Sister, Primal Scream, P J Harvey, The Levellers and Carter USM all preform.
• 80,000 people attended the 1993 festival with Tickets costing £58
• 13th June 1994 the famous Pyramid stage burnt down.
• 25 year anniversary for the 1995 festival raised over £400,000 for Greenpeace, Oxfam and local charities.
• Another year of no festival was 1996
• 1997 is becomes known as the "Year of the Mud" and a Hunter Boot must
• This was the year 90,000 people attended and tickets cost £75
• 1998 acts included Blur, Primal Scream, Robbie Williams, Tori Amos, Pulp, Bob Dylan, Roni Size and Chemical Brothers.
• 1999 100,500 people attended with tickets costing £83
• 2000 saw the biggest number in Gratecrashers at this event causing no festival for 2001
• Tickets were put on sale for 2002 festival and sold out in a week.
• Over a Million pounds was paid to the charities from the 2003 festival
• Acts for 2004 included: Paul McCartney, Muse, Oasis, James Brown, Joss Stone, Toots and the Maytals, Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters, Black Eyed Peas, Sister Sledge, and Spearhead.
• Tickets now cost £112 and 150,000 sold.
• Record for 2005 festival tickets sell out in just 3 hours.
• Another year of No festival for 2006
• Festival-goers were encouraged not to bring loo roll as recycled rolls were provided.
• 2008 was one of the first years with fine weather no wellies needed!
• This was the first year rap megastar Jay-Z headlined proving rap can have a place at a music festival
• 2009 was hailed the best Glastonbury ever with 135,000 sold for £175 each.
• This was Lady Gaga's first UK Music Festival
• 2010 was the 40th Anniversary
• There were now 4,600 toilets available for use and 670 meters of urinals for the guys.

Glastonbury Festival is the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world and a template for all the festivals that have come after it.
